Patient Refuses to Leave Hospital Room

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare staff found themselves in a situation they never expected. A patient who had been medically cleared for discharge back in October 2025 simply… didn’t leave. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. Despite repeated efforts to coordinate with her family, arrange transportation, and support her transition out of the hospital, she remained in her room—now for over five months.

With no resolution in sight, the hospital ultimately took an unusual step: filing a lawsuit to have her removed. They’re now asking the court for permission to formally evict her, even requesting that the sheriff’s office intervene if necessary. While cases of delayed discharge aren’t uncommon, this one stands out. Most “bed blocking” situations are tied to gaps in post-hospital care—but here, the issue isn’t a lack of options. It’s a refusal to leave, raising bigger questions about patient rights, hospital capacity, and the strain these rare situations place on healthcare teams.
